Establishing the significance and optimal intake of dietary antioxidants: the biomarker concept

Article Abstract:

Biomarkers of oxidative DNA damage and lipid peroxidation should be used to establish the role of antioxidants and decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Mass spectrometic measurements of various families of isoprostanes and of multiple DNA-based ixidation products appear to be the most useful biomakers for measuring lipid peroxidation and DNA damage. Relevant biomarkers should accompany all intervention trials of antioxidants to provide logical scientific basis.

Investigating the weanling's dilemma: lessons from Honduras

Article Abstract:

Several research design lessons can be learned from a study done in Honduras evaluating the effects of feeding strategies for young, poor infants. Thorough preliminary data should be collected on all participants. An appropriate number of participants should be identified to obtain meaningful results. Randomized studies on feeding schedules can be accomplished but require persistent and thorough follow-up.
