Hans Kosterlitz (1903-96)

Article Abstract:

Hans Kosterlitz, a physician, scientist and teacher, died on Oct. 26, 1996. Kosterlitz was instrumental in developing a quantitative bioassay for morphine and its congeners, and in discovering opioid peptide enkephalins. Kosterlitz left his clinical assistantship at the University of Berlin due to Nazi policies, and joined J.J.R. Macleod to pursue his work in liver glycogenesis and the role of insulin. He succeeded in isolating galactose-1-phosphate as an intermediary metabolite. Kosterlitz won the Lasker Award in 1978 for his opiate contributions.

Sounding the alarm

Article Abstract:

A list of books is presented with subjects that focus on the technological threats of media to democracy and modern society. Each of the books condemns the current state of the media and sounds alarms over a number of concerns. These concerns are based on disturbing developments including the perception that the conduct of the media has declined. Another concern is the growing global concentration of media ownership into fewer and fewer organizations.
