Lessons from genetic studies in native Canadian populations

Article Abstract:

Native Canadians with contrasting life styles also differ in diabetes rates. According to genetic studies, diabetes prevalence was 1% among the Keewatin Inuit but reached 50% among the Oji-Cree. The Inuit ate arctic fish three times a week and were physically more active than the Cree who preferred fast food. Obesity was also more pronounced in the Cree group. Genetic evidence of chromosome deletions was higher in either or both Indian populations compared to Caucasians.
