Napa Valley: the glorious fruit of vineyards replanted

The Napa Valley in California is most noted for the proliferation of wine-grape varieties in the area. One of the pests that are common in the area is phylloxera, a root louse that originated in France and was introduced in the US by grafting with vinifera cuttings.

Vines among the redwoods

Mount Veeder in the Mayacamas coastal range between the Napa and Sonoma valleys is known for its very distinctive mountain wines. They are described as an intense kind with an unruly character. One of the respected wineries in the area is the Macayamas Vineyards.

The romance of old vines

The wines of the Priorato region of Spain owe their unique taste to the slatey soil which causes the vine roots to reach deeply. The development of the region as a wine producer is discussed and several wines are recommended.
