What are American children eating? Implications for public policy

Article Abstract:

The change in health and demographic composition of the US population has led to changes in the food consumption patterns of American children. According to surveys, children's calorie consumption has been constant or declining since 1970s. While most children meet nutritional requirements, many are not getting enough iron or calcium. Increasing intake of nutrients is not related to family income, and obesity is significantly related to dietary habits. It appears that dietary guidelines suggesting that less than 30% of calories come from fat do not adversely affect growth rates amongst children.
