Enteral nutrition in acute pancreatitis

Article Abstract:

Total enteral nutrition (TEN) may be an economically desirable replacement for total parenteral nutrition (TPN) in cases of acute pancreatitis. One characteristic of pancreatitis is that oral intake of food stimulates pancreatic secretions resulting in severe pain. The use of TEN seems as effective as the use of TPN in avoiding pancreatic secretions, with a lower rate of cather-related sepsis and shorter hospital stays. In similar situations, the cost of TEN is significantly lower than that of TPN.

Ornithine oxoglutarate therapy improves nutrition status

Article Abstract:

Ornithine oxoglutarate therapy has been shown to be effective in elderly, ambulatory patients recuperating from acute illness. This group exhibited a pronounced improvement following administration of the therapy in a number of aspects, such as increased appetite for meat, overall appetite and weight gain. It is proposed, however, that its efficacy be investigated further, using hospitalized patients as subjects.

Nutrition status predicts survival in cirrhosis

Article Abstract:

The poor nutritional status of patients with liver cirrhosis or viral hepatitis may cause early death. Researchers assessed various indices of nutrition, including body weight, anthropometric, visceral, and immunologic status. Severe malnutrition, as measured by triceps skinfold thickness and midarm muscle circumference, predicted high mortality within two years.
