Broadcast delivery

Article Abstract:

The design and performance of information delivery systems that use broadcast channels and that organize information into pages, allowing two or more users to access the same page, are examined. Transmitting a single page can satisfy all pending requests for that page, which makes broadcast delivery a good choice for systems that deliver information to a community of users. The three architectures for broadcast information delivery systems considered are one-way broadcast, two-way interaction, and hybrid one-way broadcast-two-way interaction. The scheduling of page transmissions to minimize user response time is an important consideration in each architecture; for each, existing scheduling algorithms are analyzed, and mean response time for each is examined. Performance differences between the three approaches and aspects of scheduling algorithms for best response time are discussed.

Zinc lozenges reduce the duration of common cold symptoms

Article Abstract:

Further research is needed on the ability of zinc lozenges to reduce the duration of the common cold. A 1996 controlled study found that zinc lozenges could reduce the duration of symptoms of a cold from a median of 7.6 days to a median of 4.4 days. This was the eighth study of zinc lozenges and only four have shown zinc to be effective in the treatment of colds. Large doses of zinc could alter the metabolism of other minerals and could also cause significant side effects.
