Deal may cause lumber shortfall

Article Abstract:

An unsigned trade agreement to limit annual U.S. lumber imports from some Canadian provinces to 91% of their 1995 totals will increase both U.S. lumber prices and Canadian exports of engineered wood products if it is implemented. U.S. mills already suffer from a lack of domestic logs. The five-year deal to keep imports from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec to 14.7 billion bd ft annually will remove 1.5 billion bd ft from the market. The small volume of imports from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Atlantic provinces will not be affected.
