Sawmill adds value to small-log resource

Article Abstract:

The Yakama Indian Reservation constructed a sawmill as part of its plan to increase returns from their timberland assets. Before the sawmill, timberland on the reservation generated income through the sale of stumpage. With the sawmill, the Yakama Indian Nation now generates revenue through the sale of logs, softwood dimension lumber, and stumpage. The land produces a harvest of 143 million board feet annually, which accounts for approximately 90% of the tribe's revenue.

Rough mill supervisors can improve the efficiency of their mills using automated control systems which automatically determine the appropriate measures for generating strip quantities and sizes. A gang-rip-first rough mill control system based on optimization logic is detailed, based on the ROMI-RIP simulator system. This system determines the importance of each part of the gang-rip process,a nd utilizes system resources more efficiently than other systems.
