Commodore John Paul Jones won respect for the American Navy by attacking British ships off their own coast during the Revolutionary War. In 1779 his 'Bonhomme Richard' defeated 'Serapis' in a decisive battle.

Connecticut's hero

Israel Putnam served in the French and Indian war in 1754. He later became a Revolutionary War leader and was credited with proving that Americans could defeat British regulars at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
