Challenging Barbara Boxer

Article Abstract:

The three Republicans who will challenge Democrat Barbara Boxer in her campaign for re-election as Californian Senator have problems to address. Boxer has opponents to her liberal stand, but she has the advantage of her term in office, which has shown her to be a strong fighter. San Diego Mayor Susan Golding has proved her political strength, but some voters may associate her with the conviction of her former husband. Voters may consider millionaire businessman Darrell Issa a lightweight candidate, and State Treasurer Matt Fong may have to address the issue of a political contribution from Asia.

Governor

Article Abstract:

Lt Gov Gray Davis led the California primary elections for 1997 with 1,885,315 votes surpassing even Atty Gen Dan Lungren who was the clear favorite from the beginning of the campaign period. However, by the middle of Apr, 1998, Davis' luck began to change with the invalidation of Proposition 208 which limited campaign fund raising. Organized labor immediately came to his aid and Davis' advertising campaign began on Apr 20, 1998. The slogan 'experience money can't buy,' which referred to his public service experience, appealed to Californian voters and led to his victory.

Insurance Commissioner

Article Abstract:

Assemblywoman Diane Martinez won the Democratic Party primaries for the office of Insurance Commissioner. She won over Marin County Supervisor Hal Brown who did little political campaigning in the form of radio commercials only towards the end of the campaign and only against incumbent Charles W Quackenbush. The political trend of incumbents gaining reelection seems to favor Quackenbush over Martinez who has shown in the primaries that she has a meager campaign fund to support her through the Nov 1998 elections.
