District-by-district analysis: Assembly

Article Abstract:

California Republicans face a difficult but feasible task of wrestling control of the state Assembly from the Democrats in the 1992 elections. Although their chances of winning more districts are enhanced by the reapportionment, they need to hold on to all currently held seats and win in seven other districts to take control of 41 seats and secure the majority in the Assembly. The composition of the Assembly is already likelyto undergo significant change with the departure of 25 members who retired, lost in elections or launched bids for higher offices.

District-by-district analysis: Congress

Article Abstract:

An analysis of California's electoral districts shows that the composition of the state's congressional delegation will change significantly after the 1992 elections. Aside from the primary reason of an additional seven seats accorded to the state preceding a reapportionment, the composition will also be affected by retirements, losses in the primaries suffered by incumbents, and decisions to run for other elective positions. Voter perception against incumbents may also be a significant factor for those seeking reelection.

District-by-district analysis: State Senate

Article Abstract:

Individual analyses of California's election districtsshow that the composition of the state Senate will change minimally as a resultof the 1992 elections. This continuity is due to the predominantly Republican hold on 11 of the 20 odd-numbered Senatorial districts up for election. Since elections for the California state Senate are held every two years, the Republicans stand to gain from the reapportionment which will influence resultsof the 1994 elections in marginal Democrat districts.
