With Assembly funding in doubt, the Legislative Analyst's Office faces an uncertain future

Article Abstract:

The passage ofProposition 140, which imposed term limits on public officials and resulted in a 38% reduction in the Legislature's budget, resulted in an uncertain future for the Legislative Analyst's Office (LAO). The regulation has caused the Assembly to cut its financial support of the office, leaving only the Senate toshoulder the responsibility. Critics contend that such a measure will underminethe LAO's functions especially that of providing an unbiased analysis of political issues. They noted that legislators should have imposed cuts on otherareas and left the LAO to continue their work.

Will George Bush write off California?

Article Abstract:

The traditionally intense campaign for California's vote in presidential elections seems to have diminished. Although neither George Bush nor Bill Clinton can altogether dismiss California's importance, they have both been noticeably lax in campaigning for the state's 54 electoral votes. Bush, whose chances for winning in the state were decimatedby the recession which severely affected the state, may reverse an expected loss in the state by focusing either on his economic program or on Clinton's inexperience in nationbuilding.

Say, who is this guy? Stockton Assemblyman Dean Andal comes to the fore among Assembly Republicans

Article Abstract:

Stockton, CA Republican Assemblyman Dean Andal won the 1991 special election against Democrat Patti Garamendi and the 1992 reapportionment election against Democrat Michael Machado in primarily Democratic regions. His name was mentioned for Republican Assembly Minority Leader, which went to Jim Assembly Ways and Means Committee, which went to Paul Horcher (West Covina), a job he did want. His conservative stance and outspoken opposition to the 1992 budget stalemate has alienated many Democratic assembly members.
