Courting California

Article Abstract:

Recent poll surveys in California indicate that Democratic presidential candidate Bill Clinton enjoys a wide lead over Pres George Bush in the state. However, the Democrats, wary of making the same mistake they made in the 1988 presidential elections, are taking nothing for granted. Clinton has appointed several Democrats familiar with California politics to his national campaign staff. The Democrats are also doubling their efforts to increase voter registration and turnout. Additionally, they are courting the important Latino vote in the state.

Presidential politics

Article Abstract:

The Field Poll held in California in the summer of 1992 showed Democratic presidential candidate Bill Clinton holding a lead of 34 percentage points over Pres George Bush. This was the largest lead ever held by a candidate in the history of the poll. The declining fortunes of California's economy is an issue which has haunted the Bush campaign in the state. Although Bush continues to campaign hard in California, some members of the Bush campaign staff are conceding that it would be hard to defeat Clinton in the state.

Clinton's goodie bag

Article Abstract:

Bill Clinton is courting the 54 California electoral votes for the 1996 presidential elections through providing economic assistance such as for retraining defense workers and the Northridge earthquake. Critics do not think these efforts will mean much to voters who have political differences with Clinton but the expected manager of Clinton's California campaign believes Californians will recognize that Clinton worked through the system to target aid rather than just throwing money around for votes.
