John Seymour's uphill fight for the Senate

Article Abstract:

Incumbent California Rep John Seymour faces a tough battle to win in the state elections and serve out the remainder of Pete Wilson's term of office. Seymour must defeat Dianne Feinsteinwhose campaign, although weakened by a case filed against her by the Fair Political Practices Commission concerning financial statements she filed duringher bid for the governorship in 1990, keeps her a prime contender. However, a victory by Seymour is also uncertain who is handicapped by voter disregard for incumbents, party affiliation, gender issues and benefactor Pete Wilson's political performance.

Election '98

Article Abstract:

The Nov 1998 election in California for Congress and the state Legislature is expected to yield considerable influence in both local and national politics. The upcoming election will not only decide which governor shall be in power for the reapportionment that will follow the 2000 national census, it will also be closely watched for its having been significantly shaped by its primary. Other recent events are also seen to affect the elections, such as Pres Clinton's admission of an affair with a former White House intern and the continued popularity of 'seasoned' candidates.

U.S. Senate

Article Abstract:

Incumbent California Sen Barbara Boxer may have to give way to challenger Matt Fong, state Treasurer of the Republican Party, as a consequence of Pres Clinton's sexual involvement with an ex-White House intern. A one-term senator, Boxer is an advocate of gun control even as she is opposed to school vouchers and increasing the defense budget. On the other hand, Fong is generally against gun control and has expressed his support for school vouchers. He also believes in boosting military budgets, mainly to help in the fight against terrorism.
