Gold rush

Article Abstract:

The US Senate's campaign finance hearings revealed a campaign finance system that allowed inexperienced fund raisers to handle substantial amounts of contributions without thought to the legal issues involved. Specifically, the hearings revolved around the central issue of whether or not the Chinese government exerted efforts to influence US politics by supporting California lawmakers. The Republicans alleged that the Chinese aimed to achieve this goal by illegally supporting the campaigns of local politicians who they believed would rise to the level of national politics in the future.

DiFi's future

Article Abstract:

Senator Dianne Feinstein is reportedly planning to run for the governorship of California in the 1998 elections as she sees herself as a governor and wants to be a chief executive. In the Senate, many ideas and initiatives often perish between the quorum calls and endless amendments. As such, Feinstein is not too happy with the political atmosphere in Washington, D.C. Another reason to run for this office is her wish to spend more time with her husband, daughter, and grandchild in San Francisco. However, she will likely make her final decision only after the Nov 1997 elections.

An insignificant primary

Article Abstract:

Californian often complain of how such a small state as New Hampshire could overshadow a bigger and more economically powerful state as California during the presidential primaries. The state has even tried to change the situation by moving up its primaries from June to March, but other states simply moved up their own primaries in response. Nevertheless, California remains an important state in many ways.
