Health care in America: in the midst of plenty, there is want

Article Abstract:

One of the causes of the inequity in health care access in the US and the high cost of medical care is the confusing and inefficient health insurance system. Another problem is the deregulation of medical care that allowed overdevelopment and purchase of unneeded equipment. Costs of care for the uninsured are often very high because they use expensive emergency room services. Litigation also adds to medical care expense. Special interest groups have prevented reform in the past, but the efforts of the Clinton administration could bring basic health care to all Americans.

What's a government to do?

Article Abstract:

A lack of consensus characterizes the nation-wide debate over the government's role in the healthcare system in United States. The two programs, Medicare for senior citizens and Medicaid, cost the government a huge sum, though about 40 million people remain uncovered. Market-led healthcare delivery may reduce the burden on the government, but it also reduces access of the poor to such facilities, as has been seen in California. A single payer system is likely to reduce the financial burden of health care, but it seems politically impossible to implement.

The revolution in health care

Article Abstract:

A total restructuring of the medical delivery system is taking place in California. Financing health care could be done either by private insurance on an ability-to-pay basis or by fee-for-service reimbursement. Many Americans are without any health insurance, as employers refuse to pay for it. Attempts of reform by many state legislators created a framework for a system that would reduce costs, expand access and maintain quality.
