High stakes game: special interests surround new push to regulate gambling in California

Article Abstract:

The Californian Assembly is divided over the issue of introducing regulatory measures for the gambling industry which breeds corruption and crime. Local governments in California oversee the functions of card clubs, but efforts at strictly regulating are thwarted by the wealth and power of these clubs. The proposed law will give power to a five member gambling commission which will regulate gambling in the state. The Indian gambling industry and out-of-state gambling houses welcome the regulations while the card clubs are against the new regulations.

Proposition 226: labor's big victory

Article Abstract:

Proposition 226, a bill providing for an annual signed consent form to be filled up by each union member before allowing the use of union dues for political purposes, has been defeated. The measure is designed to weaken the clout of labor unions and to reduce their political influence. A reason cited for its defeat is the dissatisfaction of a sector of the voting populace who feel that they do not get an equal share in California's economic recovery.

California's new electric bill

Article Abstract:

California's electricity deregulation bill, known as Assembly Bill 1890, has been signed by the Gov. Wilson and it promises to significantly change the competitive environment in the industry within five years of its implementation. Electric utilities will likely compete not so much in the area of price but in the number and quality of services provided to customers.
