Identity politics and the domestic context of Turkey's European Union accession

Article Abstract:

An overview of the transformation of identity politics in the domestic context of Turkey's expected accession to the European Union (EU) is presented. Receding support is evidenced for the Islamist and Kurdish nationalist political parties in the last two nationwide elections, and in a national bid for improved democracy in the setting of EU-Turkey relations, Islamists and Kurdish nationalists have aligned with Kemalists, who on the whole oppose an uncontrolled, fully fledged democracy, and a European vocation for Turkey.

Can populism be defended? William Riker, Gerry Mackie and the interpretation of democracy

Article Abstract:

William Riker, an influential political scientist and author of 'Liberalism Against Populism', argues that democracy cannot be expected to reveal the true interests of voters or citizens, and suggests that populism is the idea that democracy should embody the general will. Gerry Mackie's book 'Democracy Defended' criticizes Riker's normative defense of a liberal interpretation of democracy.
