Legislative gridlock

Article Abstract:

California is one of the states where legislative ineffectiveness and political gridlock has created problems in relation to budget matters. The problems of immigration, homelessness, defense conversion, plant closures and population growth are becoming a major problem and the legislatures are unable to provide solutions the governments should adopt to tackle them effectively. The politically divided states suffer the most, as the houses are divided among themselves making it difficult for them to reach a political consensus.

Willie Brown's magic act: long-time speaker's latest miracle staves off GOP takeover

Article Abstract:

Willie Lewis Brown Jr. earned another term in office as the Speaker of Californian Legislative Assembly by outmaneuvering his Republican rival Jim Brulte. Brown, with the help of Republican Paul Horcher, managed to get a vote of 40-40 in the election for the Speaker. The House then ousted Richard Republican Mountjoy as he had already won a congressional election, which enabled Brown to win the election by a 40-39 margin.
