Los Angeles Unified School District

Article Abstract:

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is facing several challenges. It has a highly multicultural studentry, a majority of which are 'limited English proficient,' which can hinder effective teaching. In addition, poverty, criminality, low test scores, and dilapidated buildings are also causes of concern for the LAUSD. However, some comment that the size and diversity of the district are not problems because others have succeeded despite these conditions. It is hoped that a $2.4 billion bond issued in 1997 will improve the performance of the district and deal with its difficulties.

Los Angeles, CA's Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), which manages what is considered as one of the largest regional transit system in the country, has been under fire for issues of alleged mismanagement, contracting anomalies and federal funding irregularities. On separate initiatives, the inspector general and the congressional investigators appointed by the Senate have been conducting investigations to shed light on these allegations. The MTA has also been confronting legal concerns for the series of construction accidents attributed to the use of substandard materials.

Nurses under siege

Article Abstract:

Nurses continue to be traditionally perceived as hand-holders, nurturers and caregivers despite increasing numbers of them who are taking on more duties historically performed by the physician. However, the era of managed care and a growing shortage of nurses are placing more demands on the profession and pressures which have made many of them dissatisfied. Thus, the nursing profession is in a major state of transformation with its members increasingly demanding recognition as professionals.
