"Migrant mother": a Central Valley legacy

Article Abstract:

The photograph of "Migrant Mother" Florence Thompson epitomized the despair of migrant families struggling in the Great Depression of the 1930s, with the legacy of the image remaining in the 1990s. Thompson, a mother of 10, is simultaneously a symbol of both poverty and hope for those living in Central Valley, CA. Thompson first arrived in Central Valley in 1922, with her first husband undertaking mill work. His job was lost following the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the family moved on to work in the orchards and fields. Thompson died aged 79 in 1983.

Does being green mean being a spoiler?

Article Abstract:

The sparse crowd that attended Green Party gubernatorial candidate Dan Hamburg's campaign pitch at the UC Berkeley may be a sign that the country does need to institute electoral reform. Hamburg has expressed his willingness for his candidacy to become a tool not only to raise awareness about the Green Party but also to press for reform in how elections are conducted. Hamburg believes that 'instant runoff voting' should be implemented to discourage voters from voting for a candidate just to ensure that the opponent does not win.
