State bar in crisis

Article Abstract:

The California State Bar faces a financial crisis after Gov Pete Wilson rejected the annual State Bar dues bill. The governor said that his decision was prompted in part by the Bar's support for legislation seeking an increase in the Medical Injury Compensation Act's non-economic awards. The veto has deprived the organization of its means of charging lawyers the fees which constitute its budget. It has also sparked an intense debate over the professional regulation in the state.

The tragedy of Bill Honig

Bill Honig was convicted of felony offenses in awarding California Department of Education contracts to a non-profit foundation, the Quality Education Project, which was run by his wife. This case was characterized by a sense that Honig was guilty of extreme self-righteousness in pursuing educational reform, but others considered him a victim of political attack by Attorney General Dan Lungren.
