Subsidiarity as a guiding principle for European Community activities

Article Abstract:

The model of subsidiarity proposed for the European Community may lead to disputes over interpretation due to its vagueness. The model would give the Community legislative powers only in situations that could not be dealt with by individual member states. If it is decided that European Community action needs to be taken, the degree of intensity of the action would be decided. The action may come in the form of legislative measures, joint measures, supportive measures, and complimentary measures. Limitations and possible implementations of the subsidiarity model are discussed.

Governance without opposition: the case of the European Union

Article Abstract:

The European Union (EU) is a cooperative organization without political opposition or government. Some elements of the EU are oppositional but are balanced by the tendency to be exercised outside of the EU at national levels. This unidimensional quality makes the EU politically vulnerable, since no alternatives are viable to its citizens. Government by policy regulation and expert agencies is inherently fragile.

The European Union in Nice: a minimalist approach to a historic change

Article Abstract:

This article examines the December 2000 European Union meeting in Nice. The author maintains the meeting was considered a huge disappointment due to the limited topics addressed, such as the voting system of the Council, the extension of the qualified voting majority, and the expansion of the European Commission.
