The hi-tech set

Article Abstract:

UK venture capital companies provided 4.2 billion pounds sterling worth of global investment in 1997, with 3 billion pounds sterling being invested in the UK between over 1,100 firms. The industry has been accused of failing to back early stage technologies, although the amount of early stage investment has risen from about 80 million pounds sterling in 1995 to over 200 million pounds sterling in 1997. Positive risk assessment and a long term view are major factors in deciding whether to invest in early stage technological developments.

The coming of age of Italian democracy

Article Abstract:

A review of recent literature on both the Italian elections of 1992 and those of 1996 reveals that democracy has flowered in Italy despite the ambiguity demonstrated in the 1996 election. The first-past-the-post system used for the deputati allowed the center-left alliance to win the election. The typical Italian government has seen the right in power and the left in opposition, but the formation of a center-left coalition will change the nature of policy-making and of majority rule.
