The war over a new superintendent for the LAUSD

Article Abstract:

The Los Angeles Unified School District is facing a heated debate over finding a replacement for Schools Superintendent Sid Thompson, who will retire in Jun 1997. While Latino activists are advocating the appointment of second-in-command Ruben Zacarias as successor to Thompson, other educational leaders are calling for a nationwide search for the right replacement. A prime figure involved in this search is School Board member David Takofsky. While Tafosky has not ruled out the appointment of Zacarias, he feels that there has to be a systematic process with set criteria for selection.

Bilingual bellwether?

Article Abstract:

Voters in the Orange Unified School District (OUSD) unanimously supported in a Nov 1997 referendum the decision of the school board to abandon the bilingual education program in favor of an English immersion literacy program. Parents and Latino groups criticized the measure as being insensitive to public opinion. Given that the Orange County is considered as an indicator of future developments in southern California, the issue of bilingual education is expected to become a major point of debate in the upcoming elections in California in 1998.
