Academic health centers in turbulent times: strategies for survival

Article Abstract:

The need to adapt efficiently to drastic market and organizational changes has prompted academic health centers (AHCs) to employ various strategies for strengthening their competence. For AHCs that possess sufficient financial and manpower resources, the most commonly-used method is acquisition or collaboration. Others are also resorting to the expansion of health care services by forming joint venture or alliances with larger medical organizations. A number of AHCs have also been reported to undergo retrenchment procedures to minimize operational costs.

Breakeven under capitation: pure and simple?

Article Abstract:

A three-dimensional breakeven analysis is used to gauge the feasibility of adopting the virtues of capitation among healthcare providers. The number of enrollees are added to the two-dimensional model which involves cost and utilization. Research indicates that the three-dimensional breakeven analysis is complex and unreliable because it is subject to the laws of elasticity as well as natural factors like the ebb and flow of disease.

The economic value of caring

Article Abstract:

A heuristic strategy for determining the monetary value of caring was developed. The caring attitudes of health care professionals such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists and social workers have economic value to health care organizations through the effects on patient satisfaction, physiology, self-disclosure, self-esteem, and subsequent application of medications, laboratory tests and procedures.
