An econometric analysis of smoking prevalence among lone mothers

Article Abstract:

The determinants of smoking among lone mothers over the period 1991-1996 were examined using panel data. The objective was to model the probability of smoking in terms of socio-economic characteristics and previous smoking history. Results raise issues of both an econometric and a policy nature. First, the relevance of accounting for the initial conditions problem when considering dynamic random effect probit models was demonstrated. Second, the findings are the first to systematically take account of previous smoking behavior when analyzing current smoking.

State abortion rates the impact of policies, providers, politics, demographics, and economic environment

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on abortion rates by state from 1974-1988. The results indicate a correlation between restrictions on Medicaid funding for abortion and lower abortion rates in-state and higher rates among nearby states. A maximal estimate indicates that 19-25% of the abortions among low-income women that are publicly funded do not happen after funding is removed. Furthermore, parental notification laws for teen abortions have no effect on aggregate abortion rates.

Tax harmonisation and the reduction of European smoking rates

Article Abstract:

The influence of EC tax harmonization measures on European smoking rates was investigated using micro-elasticities. The results indicated that prospective growth in real incomes coupled with EC tax harmonization proposals could result in a higher incidence of smoking among Europeans. The harmonization proposals can result in an estimated 8% increase in cigarette expenditure.
