An interview with Dick Davidson

Article Abstract:

Hospitals which are part of the American Hospital Association have grown beyond the acute care field, noted the group's president Dick Davidson. Many of these attempt to offer additional coordinated services as well. Hospitals will eventually be transformed into provider sponsored organizations. Davidson emphasized that hospitals should also attempt to regain the respect and trust of their respective communities. Davidson believes that the health care environment will become much more competitive after the current changes are completed.

Cosmic connections

Article Abstract:

The late Carl Sagan was able to teach people about Albert Einstein's theory of relativity and other complex ideas because he enjoyed the topics and used understandable language to discuss them. Chief information officers should take a similar approach to conveying the importance and complexity of information systems, and chief executive officers should pay attention and try to understand the role of such systems.

The journey

Article Abstract:

The editor compares the difficult transition of an aging parent from lucidity to dementia with the difficult transition of a company from one type of organizational structure to another. Both transitions cause fear on the part of those individuals involved. It is as difficult for management as it is for staff when an organization's structure changes.
