Analysis of an organization's waste stream

Article Abstract:

A procedure for waste stream analysis is presented. The first step involved in such a process is the classification of waste into general, medical consisting of noninfectious and infectious, chemical and radioactive waste. The disposal methods are then classified. The costs associated with each type of waste and its subsequent disposal is tallied. Waste stream analysis sheds light on the volume of waste, infectious and noninfectious waste, incinerators, vendors and recycling.

Disposable versus reusable linen: back to the future

Article Abstract:

A study evaluating the benefits of changing the policy of using disposable linen over reusable linen was conducted using data from two Baptist Medical Centers. Analysis of data included an evaluation of the quality of each type of linen, claims of increased productivity with the use of disposables, cost variance and environmental issues. Results indicate that reusable linens may be more cost effective and may save the institution a substantial amount in waste disposal.
