Back from bankruptcy

Article Abstract:

Chandler Ralph has led Mercy Center for Health Services back from Chapter 11 and kept the company from being acquired by forming a strategic plan that eliminated the acute care facilities and focussed on primary and outpatient care. The center was losing up to $350,000 per month in 1990, and over half of the hospital beds were empty. A case management approach was adopted and some acute care beds were converted for long-term care use. About 400 people were laid off.

Article Abstract:

Park Nicollett Clinic and Methodist Health System merged in 1993 to form Health System Minnesota Inc. There was a great deal of planning, goal setting and debt merging that took place before the merger was completed. The management team was put together in Jun 1994 and a general financial report was issued. Costs of operation for the merged system have decreased by 26% and admission costs have decreased from $7,500 to $5,500 per person.

Some 40 First World hospitals, through the REMEDY program, are sending surplus medical supplies to developing countries.
