Balancing complex choices; integrating strategic, financial plans will test tomorrow's health networks

Article Abstract:

Health-care organizations that merge, benefit from centralized treasuries, centralized financial planning and capital acquisition and allocation. The success of joint strategic and financial planning is dependent on how the system is organized. A system that allocates joint responsibility for planning and where hospital, physicians, and community leaders take part is the most appropriate model to base a merged system on. Combined strategic financial planning is especially difficult when two competing hospital networks are joined.

For-profit or not-for-profit

Article Abstract:

Health network planners should look at the Alaskan pipeline system as a model for providing a financing mechanism for their emerging network. The Alaskan system required companies used to competing against each other to form a separate company to bring the oil to market. Each one received profits from the venture based on how much money they put into it. Health care networks could take a similar path, but if their states allow not-for-profit systems they should select that method.
