Banking on bonuses: 1998 salary survey

Article Abstract:

The health care industry's salary structure continues to evolve, with federal laws prohibiting overpayment of executives balancing the move toward incentive programs, which became popular in the 1990s. Hospitals and medical facilities are focusing more on attracting and developing good staff, but must pay high salaries to staffers who are in demand, such as those in the information technology field. Administrator base pay and bonus pay, pay raises, incentive programs and comparisons to pay in other industries are examined.

Alliant Health System and Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, KY, have received a NOVA award for their joint Health Promotion Schools for Excellence to boost the health of schoolchildren. Children in the state are among the least healthy in the nation, due to community and parental decisions that affect lifestyle, and to the rise of alcohol and cigarette use, among other problems. The program promotes good health through classes, contests, and the presence of volunteer nurses and physicians at schools.
