Bundling post-acute care (PAC) with Medicare DRG payments: an exploration of the distributional and risk consequences

Article Abstract:

The distributional and risk consequences of integrating 60 days' worth of post-hospital, post-acute care (PAC) with inpatient stay costs and paying for both via an all-inclusive, single-fee basis were studied using data from 1987-1988 Medicare claims data. Results showed that hospital-level risk would be significantly lower if PAC was integrated with diagnosis-related group payments for inpatient stays.

The effect of maternal substance abuse on the cost of neonatal care

Article Abstract:

Data from 54 Maryland hospitals in 1991 were analyzed to determine the impact of maternal substance abuse on the cost of neonatal care. The results showed that maternal drug abuse had a positive effect on total hospital charges, average daily charges and length of stay. Although not statistically significant, maternal alcohol abuse also had a positive impact on hospital care costs.

Does risk-adjusted readmission rate provide valid information on hospital quality?

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine whether readmission rates can be used as a an accurate gauge of hospital care quality. Twelve clinical conditions were identified and their readmission risk rates were estimated using Medicare UB-82 data. The results failed to support the hypothesis that readmission rates provide valid information on hospital care quality.
