Culturally competent scholarship: substance and rigor

Article Abstract:

The content of culturally competent scholarship as a guide for health care can be determined, its rigor evaluated, and common pitfalls avoided. Focusing on culture to the exclusion of other factors can lead to stereotyping. Arenas for investigation include sociocultural profiles, the effects of diversity among caregivers and care recipients, the effects of marginalization, and how culture-specific phenomena impact nursing care. Eight characteristics of culturally competent research can be used to evaluate whether the project design and implementation demonstrates cultural competency.

Technology, deskilling, and nurses: the impact of the technologically changing environment

Article Abstract:

Examining the history of nursing care by analyzing the American Journal of Nursing reveals that the rapid advances in technology of the past 50 years have resulted in a fragmentation and devaluing of nursing skills. Nurses have responded mostly ineffectively by attempting to gain credibility and legitimacy for the caring aspects of nursing. This effort has largely failed. Increased understanding of the interplay among technology, labor process, and gender bias should help nurses craft a more successful response.
