Article Abstract:

Dysrhythmia, the heart rhythm disturbances and changes in the cardiac conduction system, are a function of age. These changes affect cell structures in the heart, such as energy metabolism or degeneration of the SA node and atrial myocardium. Vascular changes and autonomic influences also alter the rate of response. Nursing considerations involve monitoring for evidence of dysrhythmia and related complications, reducing patient anxiety, and open communication with the patient.

Article Abstract:

Efforts to stop the spread of a vancomycin-resistant enterococcus in all the intensive care units in an urban hospital included changing the staff attitudes. In addition to increased sanitation and isolation in the unit, staff underwent education in better preventative techniques. This education was reinforced with monthly meetings and positive reinforcement.

Nosocomial infection among immunosuppressed patients in the intensive care unit

Article Abstract:

Because many patients in the intensive care unit are immunodepressed, either because of treatment, disease or age, the incidence of nosocomial infections is highest there. Statistics regarding incidence are presented, as are descriptions of the various risks of infection. Careful following of all safety procedures is the only defense.
