Economic grand rounds: a forum for cost consciousness

Article Abstract:

Economic Grand Rounds (EGR) programs that encourage medical staff to implement cost-controlling measures can be successful if programs are modified to ensure group efforts among hospital staff. An EGR program can help physicians and staff members learn the costs of certain physician practices. EGRs must allow medical staff policy changes and be accepted by everyone involved in the program. All hospitals should evaluate EGR programs so they can be designed and implemented according to hospital needs.

Recruiting physicians: avoiding the legal minefield

Article Abstract:

There are many legal considerations for hospitals when recruiting medical staff. The inurement provisions of IRS regulations covering hospital tax-exemption specifically limit the inducements hospitals may offer to physicians. Federal Medicare and Medicaid fraud and abuse laws contain safe harbor provisions on business arrangements. Hospitals should evaluate their physician recruiting practices very carefully to ensure compliance with these laws.
