Ethical issues in organ donation and transplantation: are we helping a few at the expense of many?

Article Abstract:

Ethical problems surround organ donation and transplantation. The most appropriate context for discussing these issues is within the concept of universal health care. Most Americans support universal care, but few can agree on a definition. The high cost of transplantation and low numbers of persons benefiting from transplants exclude this benefit from most health plans. Implementing universal health care would increase organ availability while decreasing the number of eligible recipients.

Liver transplantation and nursing care in Israel

Article Abstract:

The success rate of liver transplants at the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem has grown over the last two decades. Improved nursing techniques and patient preparation are the cause. Because of the small population size of Israel, many chronic patients wait a long time for transplants and need supportive nursing.
