How to use the Internet

Article Abstract:

Production and inventory control (PIC) managers can use the Internet to find real-time solutions to problems so it is imperative that PIC managers learn to use this new information tool. Information in the Internet is extensive and updated and accessing that information requires only software, a service provider and appropriate hardware. Using the Internet takes practice but it is a potentially productive learning experience that promises to be fun and full of surprises.

The evolution to electronic data interchange: are there benefits at all stages of implementation?

Article Abstract:

Midsize companies cannot expect maximum benefits from electronic data exchange (EDI) compared to large firms with large numbers of day-to-day transactions. Midsize companies may experience reduced number of transaction errors, reduced paperworks, and a higher rating from the customers. However, the installation of such kind of technology does not decrease the number of workers, is not cost-effective and cannot meet the different demands of the customers.

Using the Internet to achieve purchasing improvements at General Electric

Article Abstract:

The use of the Internet by General Electric's Lighting Division proved to be effective in enhancing its purchasing and logistics performance. The division established a trading process network (TPN) which enables the buying office to speed up its transmission of a price quotation request. The TPN system improved GE Lighting's reach of its supplier base and lessen the company's total cycle time by about 50%.
