Article Abstract:

Health Management Associates CEO William Schoen has led the chain to triple revenues since 1992. The 32-hospital chain began a makeover in 1983: Schoen got rid of all but three hospitals and then bought about two each year. HMA is considered a success story for investor-own hospitals because it balances financial concerns with quality-of-care issues. The firm usually pumps capital into formerly non=profit hospitals is rural areas.
