Mean streets: five lessons from the front lines of reengineering

Article Abstract:

The reorganization of Neptune, NJ-based Jersey Shore Medical Center is examined. The medical center needed to reduce costs by 25% and implement its redesign by Jan 1996. A reorganization not only involves changes in hospital and health maintenance organization structures but also involves changes in job descriptions. The medical center believed its was important to be honest with employees, do extensive planning, implement necessary changes, expect staff resistance and integrate the difficult changes.

Franklin Regional Hospital: Franklin, New Hampshire: small hospital thrives while pushing its walls into the community

Article Abstract:

Franklin, NH-based Franklin Regional Hospital won the Foster G. McGaw Prize in 1991. The hospital reaches out to its community through health and wellness programs for the elderly, pregnant women, school children and families. Its community service program is financed through grant dollars and the hospital put $759,923 in reserves in 1994 from revenues of over $13 million. It plans to continue its community outreach programs through a primary care center.

Resurrection's renewal

Article Abstract:

The Chicago, IL-based Resurrection Medical Center began with two wings in the 1950s and has grown to include two hospitals, two local nursing homes, medical office buildings and clinics in 1995. There will be divisions established to differentiate inpatient and outpatient services. This restructuring will assist the medical center in obtaining managed care services. The medical center has adequate funding to restructure.
