End of a headache for US policy-makers

Article Abstract:

The government and guerrillas in El Salvador have agreed to end the 12 years of civil war following talks focusing on military reform overseen by the United Nations. The war began in 1980 when the US intervened to quell left-wing insurgencies. US tax-payers have financed the El Salvador army. Economic aid, land reform and elections were organised. Right-wing death squads committed atrocities and assassinated a bishop who opposed them.
