Ready, set go: positioning for coming changes

Article Abstract:

Hospitals and other providers must lay the groundwork for health care reform. For example, SunHealth Alliance has made a commitment among its partners to carefully assess the health care needs of the communities surrounding each hospital. SunHealth is also urging medical staffs, boards of directors and managers to collaborate on implementing health care reform, and the organization has added a physician to its top management. Factors critical to the success of such collaborative work are also discussed.

The data debate: CIOs weigh issues, obstacles to information networks

Article Abstract:

The chief information officers of six US hospitals discuss the planning of community health information networks. While all agree that sharing information will become necessary as health care reform is implemented, there are many problems involved in planning such systems. For example, a hospital may not want to make a large investment in computer equipment to share with a competing hospital that is not making a similar investment. Several other such issues are discussed.

Let the community decide: a new delivery model

Article Abstract:

Communities should have the power to decide how they want health care services delivered. The present system assumes that local hospitals make decisions in the best interests of the community. However, political pressure for health care reform may upset the model pyramid of primary care, community hospitals and specialized care. Hospitals and communities must collaborate to reach desirable solutions to their needs.
