Telling pay from payola; boosted by a federal court ruling, a Texas attorney vows to put HMO doctor fees in the open

Article Abstract:

Fort Worth, TX attorney George Parker Young has decided to exploit a crack in the legal armor of HMOs whose physicians are reluctant to refer members to specialists because of the financial interests the physicians have in not recommending specialist care. A federal court's ruling in favor of a patient who died after his doctor refused to send him to a specialist forms the basis for Young's campaign to have HMOs disclose their financial arrangements with physicians.

Article Abstract:

Managed care plans and pioneering health systems that are receptive to the idea of identifying patients who are more vulnerable to costly medical services and taking steps to keep them from getting sick, can now count on a new way of determining who these patients are. This new approach utilizes a combination of a sophisticated analysis of databases with information on lab tests, prescriptions and claims with well-thought-out questionnaires.

Article Abstract:

(IHS), which has been on an acquisition binge that has made it the second largest home health firm, must now effectively merge all of those acquisitions to create an efficient, integrated healthcare company. IHS's acquisition of First American Health Care gave it a total of 700 locations in 44 states. Wall Street analysts are skeptical about IHS's strategy.
