The Abbey-Shepherd device education model

Article Abstract:

The Abbey-Shepherd device education model shows that medical device usage relies upon nursing knowledge and skills. Levels of complexity found in the model include operational procedures, procedure fundamentals, science and technology and systems principles. Device purpose is achieved through operational procedures. Procedures are then followed by fundamentals which give meaning to these steps. The science and technology level consists of basic science which encompasses design and specifications. Finally, systems principles integrates the interaction of the device, patient, nurse, facility and environment.

Special needs of adult critical care units

Article Abstract:

The nurse manager must evaluate products, prices, and vendors, in meeting the purchasing needs of adult critical care units. Such needs depend upon the type, acuity, and length of stay of the unit's patients, as well as the location of the procedures and the product cost and safety features. Vendor evaluation techniques are described, and buying trends, including group buying, are discussed. A plan for orderly purchase requests is presented, and future purchasing trends are outlined.
