The new HCFA chief

Article Abstract:

Newly appointed head of the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) Bruce C. Vladek discusses his views on Medicare, Medicaid, health care reform and the HCFA's dealings with hospitals. For example, he plans to move Medicare patients into other managed care plans and is searching for an equitable method for financing this arrangement. In addition, he believes that Medicaid will exist for years to come because it finances nursing care and services for the chronically disabled. His views on a variety of other health care-related topics are also presented.

Who'll make decisions? Experts debate makeup and power of a national health care board

Article Abstract:

The make-up and powers of a national health care board to oversee and administer President Clinton's health-care reform policy is under debate by administration experts. Some think the board should be formed with similar powers and structures as the Prospective Payment Assessment Commission (ProPAC) and the Physician Payment Review Commission (PPRC.) ProPAC AND PPRC are permanent advisory bodies on Medicare, parts of Medicaid and now health care reform.

Congress grapples with Medicare reductions outside reform

Article Abstract:

Proposals by the Congress to cut Medicare spending are being complicated even more so because of the impending health care reform plan. The House Ways and Means Committee has proposed a two-year freeze on Medicare provider payments that is expected to reduce spending by $50.5 billion in five years. The Senate Finance Committee is seeking to cut Medicare and Medicaid beyond the $56 billion President Clinton proposes.
