The veterans healthcare system: preparing for the twenty-first century

Article Abstract:

The US veterans healthcare system was established in 1946. In 1997, it is the largest US integrated healthcare system, the largest US research enterprise, the largest homeless persons services provider and the largest US health professional training facility. The structure is undergoing change from a system of individual hospitals to integrated services networks.

Strategic alliances in healthcare: opportunities for the Veterans Affairs healthcare system

Article Abstract:

Strategic alliances have been utilized by other facets of the healthcare industry and might work for the changes that are necessary in the US Department of Veterans Affairs. An analysis of basic strategic alliance formations is provided. Utilization of each of these formations and application of them to the US Department of Veterans Affairs is also provided.

The Health Services Research and Development's Management Decision and Research Center has provided this information to enable the US Department of Veterans Affairs to increase its effectiveness and efficiency. An overview and synthesis of existing literature on managed care principles is provided. Additional information on benchmarking could be helpful.
