What goes around ... hospitals urged to assess their TB prevention plans

Article Abstract:

The spread of tuberculosis (TB) in hospitals is increasing as a problem, and many hospitals are making efforts to improve their infection control programs. HIV-positive patients with weakened immune systems account for a large percentage of those infected. New York, NY, reported 950 cases of TB in 3rd qtr 1992. It is estimated that it costs up to $300,000 to treat each TB patient. In addition to TB strains that respond to existing medications, a number of drug-resistant strains have been reported. Suggestions for preventing these nosocomial infections are given.

As hospital drug budgets soar, pharmacy's role is being rewritten

Article Abstract:

Hospital pharmacists play increasingly broader roles in administrative and patient care decisions as drug costs escalate. Between 1987 and 1990, average annual pharmacy expenses per occupied bed rose 29%. In response, hospital pharmacists spend increasingly more time providing information about the appropriateness and cost-effectiveness of drug therapies to physicians and pharmacy and therapeutics committees.
