2003 Nobels awarded for pioneering research in MRI, cellular channels

Article Abstract:

Paul Lauterbur and Peter Mansfield won the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work on magnetic resonance imaging. Peter Agre and Roderick MacKinnon won the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering the structure and function of cell membrane proteins that function as channels for water and ions.

Pay Attention: Ritalin Acts Much Like Cocaine

Article Abstract:

Researchers show that Ritalin acts much like cocaine does but may not necessarily cause addiction. However, one study found that children who take Ritalin for attention deficit disorder (ADD) are more likely to become drug addicts as adults than other children.

Scientists find connections in the brain between physical and emotional pain

Article Abstract:

Two areas in the brain that process physical pain also seem to process emotional pain. These areas are the anterior cingulate cortex and the right ventral prefrontal cortex. This explains why antidepressants can often reduce physical pain.
