Between hope and a hard place

Article Abstract:

The international community is showing interest in malaria, but a shortage of expertise and infrastructure in the healthcare and research systems of poor countries is threatening their ability to implement international initiatives. Organizations such as the World Health OrganizationEs Roll Back Malaria initiative, the Gates Malaria Partnership and the Multilateral Initiative on Malaria are attempting to address the situation, but their efforts are fragmented and insufficient.

Public funding for Alzheimer disease research in the United States

Article Abstract:

The principal source of funding for Alzheimer disease research in the United States is the federal government through the National Institute of Health (NIH). In fiscal 2005, the NIH funded $656 million, in Alzheimer disease research aimed to support the best investigators-initiated research and encourage the work of new investigators.

NIH gives money for orphan development

Article Abstract:

The Challenge Grants program, established by the National Institutes of Health, is discussed. The author maintains the program was formed to provide private research companies with the finances to speed up the development of specific drugs, particularly in the areas of malaria, tuberculosis, influenza, and dengue fever.
